Social Networking Sites

There are many social networking sites for people to use or enjoy. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram represent just a few of them. Let's compare and examine these different platforms.

Facebook is one of the most if not the most popular social networking site in the world. It was founded in 2004. Since the launch, it grew exponentially. Facebook has a nice looking and easy to manipulate through interface. It can get more complex if the user chooses to dive more into it, exploring its features and what Facebook offers. In raw words, Facebook is a place where the user can create his/her own space for self. People can post links, worded posts, express themselves, share videos, connect with friends and family, meet new people, directly message someone. Facebook just offers a lot, and it is the people who choose what feature they will use.

Instagram is a Facebook-owned social networking site. It was founded in 2010, which is a few years later that its mother platform. What Instagram does is technically the same things that Facebook does but in a bit different way. It has fewer features, a simpler interface and it makes "posts with pictures" its main idea. I would say that more younger people tend to use Instagram and that the simplicity of just sharing pictures with others is what attracts many people to it.

Twitter was founded in 2006, and as its name indicates, the main focus of Twitter is to post, comment and look for tweets. The site is simple with fewer features than Facebook, limiting people's tweets to 280 characters. What is really cool about Twitter is that using a # you can see posts, ideas and things that don't belong just to your friends on Twitter, but all the users who are affiliated with a particular #.

Another social networking site is YouTube. It is quite different from previous sites by a lot. YouTube brings people together by video type media. People post videos related to all kinds of things and topics, and others, if allowed, can view them and post comments below. You can subscribe to favorite channels so you can get up to date news on those particular channels. People can like videos or dislike them. YouTube is really amazing for the rich and ever-stretching content it offers.

  1. Agree with all your assessments. I especially in consensus with your depiction of Instagram: Who knew pictures could convey a thousand words and can take over the minds of social media users.
