Blog v Wiki

Wikis and blogs may seem similar, but in the end, they are two different platforms. Let's start with similarities. Both blogs and wikis are composed of a user or users who share some kind of information and resources. They provide means of communication and information. They do just that in a bit different ways.

Wiki can be a website which based on the collaboration of many users, rather than singular creation. Wiki may be updated, changed or deleted by any user, or any authorized user. By editing, adding or deleting, users contribute to the information, ultimately creating what we call a wiki. In the article, "More on How to Build Your Own Wikipedia", Margret Locher conveys that wikis make it easy to share and gather content/information while encouraging discussions. Wiki can be used as a good tool for nearly any team project.

Blog is usually more a personal website which is constructed by a single user to share information and/or resources; like an online journal. The information found on blogs is usually more focused on a certain topic or set of particular topics. Blog is different from a wiki in a matter that users cannot modify original posts made by the blogger. Blogger is the only one who has the authority and access to change the posts/content. What blogs are good is interaction rather than modification. People can leave comments or links under the posts where the blogger and other people can see it. In the article, “How can we measure the influence of the blogosphere” Kathy Gill explains that blogging is like “our day book, our collective diary which records our common life”. She conveys that blog is not like TV or news, rather unrestricted space for creations and recordings of the blogger which can influence the outside world in any way.

Blogs are more personal when comparing to Wikis but there is still a lot of space for collaborating. Blogs can be used for collaboration when a manager of a company creates a post in which employees will comment, creating a form of a discussion and therefore collaboration on a certain topic. People who leave comments under the post may collaborate with one another, not necessarily directly to the content creator. This expands possibilities of collaboration on certain topics even more.

I had an idea of a new way of using a wiki, but after googling I found out that it already exists. It’s called “gamepedia”, and it is a wiki made solely for the purposes of digital gaming and related tournaments.

In today’s world, everything is about convergence. Convergence helps make our daily tasks easier by merging two or more different aspects and functions together under the same network. Network convergence is the merging of telephone, video, and data communication within a single network. Many of us take advantage of how easy it is today to find telephone, video and data communication all within a single network in a single infrastructure like our phone provider/facebook/cell-phone/computer. It saves time and helps keep day to day tasks easier and faster by having it all in one network instead of separate infrastructures and networks. The convergence of communication in today’s online platform like Facebook, Wikipedia, and blog sites have made collaborating and communication from one to another, easier.

Without network convergence, we would be using different infrastructures and networks for each individual function or activity like watching a video, to calling/texting to browsing or even gaming. Today, it is easy to do many different activities at once or around the same time because of the convergence of the different networks into one. It is easy to communicate and interact with family, friends and strangers through the online web thanks to network convergence. Technology is innovating and improving every day and even though it seems like we have converged most of the important things we mostly use today, there is still more space for convergence to make our lives easier, more convenient and flexible.
